Scouting Report

1999 Season
In his third full season with Redrum, Kawika Iida had another fine year at the plate. He was moved from batting cleanup, down to 6th slot in the batting order. Despite the limited RBI opportunities, he was second on the team with 38 RBIs in 26 games. He was also second on the team with a .985 slugging percentage & third on team with a .672 batting average.

Hitting
Iida is one of the most powerful hitters on the team and although he clearly favors the left side of the diamond, he can clear the fences in any part of the ballpark. His strong wrists and hands not only give him explosive power but also impressive bat control. He remains dangerous even with two strikes. In the past, pitchers tried to survive by keeping the ball down and trying to make him hit it on the ground, but he did a better job of getting the ball in the air last year. He will perform at the highest level in clutch situations where the game is on the line.

Baserunning & Defense
Iida is an average fielder. His weight gain is his greatest liability. Iida isn't very mobile or adept at fielding hard hit balls in the dirt. He played at third base the majority of the time, but he also had brief stints at second base & in the outfield. He has limited speed and runs the bases conservatively.

2000 Outlook
Iida is one of the offensive leaders on the team. He may resist the move, but Redrum may need to shift him to first base or as the designated hitter within the next season or two, simply to keep his bat in the lineup. The loss of starting first baseman Steve Bradford may open the door for such a shift. As a first baseman, Iida conceivably could reach greater offensive heights & perform well on the field defensively.
