Weighted Bat Drill
SwingAway - Get Good Gazette, Volume 2 Issue 3

Use a weighted bat (three to four ounces heavier than your normal bat but one you can control) to strengthen the muscles involved in the swing. This is a conditioning drill that should be incorporated in every hitting session.

Take twenty-five (25) good swings. Focus on proper hitting technique, taking a few seconds between each swing. It is absolutely imperative to use a bat that can be controlled.

Follow this set of swings by using a bat that is three to four ounces lighter than your game bat. This will train the neuromuscular system to swing faster. Again, take 25 swings, focusing on proper technique. The lighter weight will naturally translate into greater hand/bat speed. We strongly recommend the SwingAway Sweet Spot Bat as the lighter bat. It possesses lighter weight, yet requires a proper swing to gain solid contact.

Complete two sets of 25 swings with both the heavier and lighter bat.

Return to the work station and take 25 swings with your game bat. Focus on proper hitting technique and increase bat/hand speed.

This drill should be repeated every other day through pre-season and regular season. It will strengthen your “swing” muscles, increase hand/bat speed, and tighten up your stroke.
