Mayonnaise on Someone’s Head: The Ultimate Hitting Drill
SwingAway - Get Good Gazette, Volume 2 Issue 7

“Extra mayo please, hold the onion"

George Jakubaas created the ultimate drill for keeping one’s head still (“quiet”) while hitting a baseball. Although it is a bit unorthodox, it bears truth and “consideration.”

The coach obtains a large jar of mayonnaise and spoons a cup of mayonnaise (light or regular) on to the batter’s head (without cap is most effective). He then spreads it, neatly of course, so it rests on the apex of the pate. He then takes another layer and builds it on top of the first; he repeats a third time. Now the batter has three cups of mayonnaise balancing precariously on the very top of his head. Viola!

Why is this an excellent drill to reinforce NOT moving one’s head while hitting? It has been proven by actual field testing that most people will not move their head, with mayo atop it, in order to avoid soiling their clothes. As a result, the batter will focus on the ball and keep his head silent therefore not moving his eyes and have a better opportunity to hit the pitched ball!

A bit bizarre? Yes. Extraordinary? Yes, but it works!

DRILL:
Address the plate in your hitting stance.
Take a “focused” swing
Repeat.

“You have to keep your eyes on the ball.”
