Proper Contact Points & Staying "Inside The Ball" SwingAway - Get Good Gazette, Volume 2 Issue 7
The diagram above details proper contact point of the bat and the pitched ball for different locations. Many people do not understand this concept and therefore struggle when hitting. In the diagram, the red bats represent the right-handed hitter, blue bats, left-handed hitter. Inside - contacted normally about 12" out in front of home plate Middle - contact about 6" in front of home plate Outside - contact near front corner of home plate. As you look at the diagram you will notice that the hands are located "inside the ball" on all locations. This means that the hands are between your body and the ball at the proper point of contact. Many think you stride toward the pitch. Not true! You do not have time to do this. ... The farther the pitch is away from you, the farther you must let the ball travel so you can achieve proper contact position. If you develop a short stroke, taking your hands directly to the "inside the ball" position, you will be a much better hitter.
