Get a Good Pitch to Hit!
SwingAway - Get Good Gazette, Volume 2 Issue 15

“From the Greatest Hitter to the Newest…”

“Get a Good Pitch to Hit!” was the credo of probably the greatest hitter that ever lived: Ted Williams. In any book or treatise that quotes “Teddy Ballgame” regarding hitting, you will see this quote… Why? Because he believes it to be true. Once you learn the proper hitting techniques, you have just scratched the surface to the “secrets of hitting.” The next step and most important is determining what pitch to hit!! This requires practice, focus, concentration, and knowledge of your abilities and the pitcher’s “arsenal.” You must create your strike zone and “Get a Good Pitch to Hit!” One size does NOT fit all…

To emphasize the importance of his credo, Ted would “lecture” his teammates after every game, win or lose. He said the same exact thing after every game. “You’ll get one good pitch to hit.” One good pitch. That’s all. Don’t count on more. So you better know the strike zone. And when you get that one good pitch you better hit it and hit it hard. “Remember, just one good pitch!” Take the advice of the last .400 hitter, and a true hitter whose only mission in life was to be the greatest hitter that ever lived. “Get a Good Pitch to Hit!”

DRILLS:

  1. Build your own strike zone. Determine your strengths and weaknesses by hitting “short toss” and finding your zone.
  2. Focus on hitting strikes and balls in the strike zone.
  3. While waiting to hit, concentrate and focus on the pitcher’s propensities/trends… Where he throws and which of his pitches is a “Good Pitch to Hit.”
