AVOIDING “Little League Elbow”

AVOIDING “Little League Elbow”
“Proper preparation prevents peril”

Learn proper throwing mechanics and limit the number of pitches per game.

It is very easy for a youngster to overthrow and injure his/her arm. It is not difficult to prevent or avoid “Little League Elbow.”

  1. Limit the number of pitches you throw per game and week. It is not the number of innings that is important but number of pitches. (Early in the season should be very limited-work up as the season progresses.)

  2. Warm up properly: Play catch, long toss, and stretch out before EVERY time you are scheduled to pitch. RUN!

  3. ALWAYS wear a jacket after coming in from the mound and pitching… no matter how hot it is!

  4. Ice your arm for at least 30 minutes after EACH game.

  5. Do not throw breaking pitches until mid-teens or with proper coaching instruction. You can throw strikes with good location and different velocities when young and hitters will not hit you.

  6. Develop proper mechanics:
    1. The elbow of the throwing arm should be ABOVE shoulder height as you begin the release.
    2. Fingers should be BEHIND the ball upon release.
    3. Hand on TOP of the ball upon release.
    4. Master the fastball and changeup before throwing “breaking” pitches.
    5. Use your legs to provide “pitching power.”

  7. If your arm is sore or hurts, tell the coach and DO NOT pitch.
