What is BPF?

BPF stands for Bat Performance Factor. It is similar to the COR rating assigned to softballs to indicate their liveliness. A softball is mounted on a rotating axis that has virtually no friction to inhibit movement. A softball is shot out of an "air" cannon at exactly 60 MPH. The ball hits the stationary bat. The speed in which the bat moves as it is hit is recorded. From the COR rating of the ball, and the MPH speed of the bats as it is hit by the ball, a formula is used to come up with the BPF rating for the bat being tested. This provides a standard that will limit how fast a ball can come off the bat.
